Learning Through Play

The activities and experiences that your child has whilst at nursery will be based on our use of "The Early Years Foundation Stage". This document was produced by the Department for Education and Skills and we use it to plan for your child's learning and to assist their development. It has six areas of learning:

  • Personal, social and emotional development
  • Communication, language and literacy
  • Problem solving, reasoning and numeracy
  • Knowledge and understanding of the world
  • Physical development
  • Creative development

We use a continuous cycle of planning, observation, recording and assessment and through this cycle the staff build upon your child's achievements to further promote their development.

Children learning in a group

In planning for children's learning, equality of opportunity, race, gender, disability and culture are always taken into account. Staff always understand the limitation of a child's individual ability and positively encourage skills to develop.

In order to promote the individual achievements, successes, likes and dislikes and include all the personal details which make your child individual and special, each child has a Development Record. It is intended as a joint record between home and nursery and we hope you join with us in celebrating the many small steps your child will make.

Our happy team!

The final section in your child's folder is the EYFS assessment sheet and titled "Starting from the child". These are divided into the different age groups appropriate to your child's age and development and updated on a regular basis by your child's key person.

By the time your child is ready to leave Leo's this folder will present a picture of the changes and developments which have taken place since their first day at Leo's. This picture will be different for each child's Development Record. The EYFS recommends you pass this portfolio on to your child's school so they have a record of the development your child has made.

Your Child's Development

Learning through play is extremely important for the development of your child at nursery school. We encourage all children to develop at their own pace, presenting them with challenges as they move through their time with us designed to push them to the next stage.
